For many people, the idea of travelling becomes more worrying as they get older or if they develop mobility difficulties.
Walking long distances, climbing steps, carrying luggage or spending long periods standing can all make travelling seem much more difficult than it once was. Some people even begin to wonder whether holidays are still possible.
I understand those concerns.
Like many people, I have experienced my own health and mobility challenges, and I know that travelling sometimes requires a little more planning than it did in earlier years. However, I have also discovered that there are now many ways to make travel easier and more enjoyable.
The first step is choosing the right holiday. Not every trip suits every person, and there is nothing wrong with selecting a holiday that matches your own needs and abilities.
Many hotels now offer accessible rooms, lifts and adapted facilities. Airports can provide assistance services, and cruise ships often offer excellent accessibility throughout the ship.
It can also help to think about:
- Shorter walking distances.
- Ground floor accommodation or lifts.
- Accessible transport options.
- Rest stops during excursions.
- Suitable travel insurance.
- Comfortable seating and transfer arrangements.
One of the most important things I have learned is that asking for help is not a weakness. Airport assistance, hotel staff and tour guides are there to make your journey easier.
Travel does not have to mean rushing from place to place. Sometimes the greatest pleasure comes from sitting beside the sea, enjoying a beautiful view or discovering somewhere new at your own pace.
As someone who is particularly interested in accessible travel, I believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to explore, experience new places and make happy memories.
Your journey may look different from somebody else’s.
But it is still your journey.
With the right planning, support and advice, many wonderful travel experiences remain possible.
Because adventure does not belong only to the young or the perfectly fit. It belongs to all of us.

Modern cruise ships can provide comfortable and accessible ways to travel and explore new destinations.
