Packing for a holiday can be exciting, but it can also become a little stressful. As we get older, we often need to think about a few additional things to help us travel comfortably and confidently.
After my own travels and plenty of planning for future adventures, here are some simple packing tips that may help.
1. Make a Checklist
A written checklist can remove much of the worry. It is very easy to remember the obvious things and forget something important. I find that crossing items off as I pack makes the whole process much more relaxed.
2. Keep Medication Close By
Always carry essential medication in your hand luggage if you are flying. It is also useful to carry a list of your medications and any important medical information, just in case.
3. Pack Layers Rather Than Heavy Clothes
Weather can change quickly, even in warm countries. Lightweight layers often work much better than one heavy item and take up less space in your suitcase.
4. Choose Comfortable Footwear
Holidays often involve more walking than we expect. Comfortable, supportive shoes can make a tremendous difference to your enjoyment.
5. Leave a Little Space
It is tempting to fill every corner of your suitcase, but leaving some room gives you space for souvenirs, gifts or the occasional unexpected purchase.
6. Take Copies of Important Documents
Keep copies of your passport, insurance details, booking information and emergency contact numbers. Digital copies on your phone can also be very useful.
7. Pack for Comfort
A favourite book, a sun hat, sunglasses, a lightweight bag or a travel pillow can all make a journey more enjoyable.
As we get older, travelling does not necessarily become more difficult. Sometimes we simply become better at understanding what makes us comfortable.
Good preparation allows us to spend less time worrying and more time enjoying the places we visit.
After all, the aim is not to pack more. The aim is to travel better.
